The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
