No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
