The star has handed over the full amount of his £25k honor winnings to the MVT, which functions to save the UK's independent live music spots.

He was awarded the prize on mid-October as his new release People Watching was named the best record of the past year.

The musician has opted to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the crucial part local spots had in his initial steps.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it wasn't for all the gigs I did around the North East, and beyond, when I was just getting going," stated the artist. "These venues are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these locations have permanently closed – approximately 16% of the entire UK sector.

Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its efforts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a modest fee to their ticket prices, which benefits independent venues.

Fender also took part, generating over £100k on his live tour to assist numerous small stages across England, Scotland, and Wales.

These funds supported spaces that were confronting possible closure due to difficulties arising from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and sound issues.

Some locations were granted financial assistance in upgrading amenities and sound and lighting systems that positively impacted musicians and fans.

"The idea that revenue from concerts in big venues supports the smaller venues, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just logical," Fender has said.

In the past week, the MVT announced it had protected a couple of small stages in south-east England, by placing them under local control.

The Joiners in Southampton and the other in the city were acquired under the Own Our Venues scheme, which is supported by a national body and supporters who purchase "ownership units" in the properties.
