The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the detention, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of his move to embassies near the home, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a embassy office", a declaration said.

The legal document highlights that the United States embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.

International Reactions

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

He is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was convicted of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been provoked by him whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The ex-leader called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
