The Former President's Progressive Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an grave threat to the continent's identity. However, this perspective rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge confronting Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper European business. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation technologies, it can still dramatically boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's technological decline has been steady. But, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
