This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Consider this a test for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a intense contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a special spark to their roles, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their new home, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists tumble into an underground cave. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render countless layers to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they still love one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply glance toward your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
